Saudade
Saudade is a Portuguese word that’s often described as untranslatable.
It is often associated with loss or sadness but it is a much more complex emotion.
James Cave (Portugalist.com, 2019) explains this emotional state from litterture before The Age of Discoveries, when Portuguese sailors wife would feel incomplete with their lovers away. They would feel the distance between them and the sailors would feel the same. Despite all the good memories, they might not get to create more in the future.
Sadness is a large part of this emotion but also happiness plays a role as one remembers the good times they’ve spent with someone.
